MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

ERSAI has established an Environmental Management System in accordance with legal requirements of the Republic of Kazakhstan, international standard ISO 14001, and SAIPEM operational practice.

One of the main objectives of ERSAI is to minimize impact on the environment, prevent pollution and ensure rational use of resources. The company closely monitors the risks and opportunities associated with significant environmental aspects in order to assure safety of its operations in regard to the environment.

ASPECTS

Within the defined scope of its environmental management system, ERSAI has determined the environmental aspects of its activities and services to control the impact on the environment and associated risks and opportunities

Identified environmental aspects have enabled ERSAI to focus on the areas of potential risks and implement strategies designed to reduce undesired impacts. Those strategies include raising the environmental awareness of personnel, operational control of significant environmental aspects such as waste and wastewater generation, natural resource consumption, occurrence of spills.

Control of the environmental impact is maintained through environmental monitoring of the air quality, sea water, groundwater, wastewater, soil, flora and fauna condition.

SERVICES

Waste Management

ERSAI’s waste management plan utilizes the approach of a gradual minimization of wastes by improving the operational processes via implementation of low waste technologies, by reusing wastes inside of the company and by handling them over to interested private or corporate parties for reuse and recycling.

ERSAI’s waste management approach has allowed for increase of the amount of waste sent over for recycling and reuse to about 40% of wastes annually.

SERVICES

Water Management

ERSAI operates a desalination plant with a capacity to produce 1000 cubic meters of freshwater per day. This allows the company to be self-sufficient in supplying water for operational activities, residential area activities, as well as supplying water for the visiting barges. ERSAI also has its own Wastewater Treatment Plant. The WTP consists of three modules and has the ability to treat sewage water, oily water, technical water to a high quality level. Overall capacity of the waste water treatment plant is higher than ERSAI’s operational needs, which allows for receiving of sewage water from barges for treatment.

Treated wastewater is stored in evaporation ponds until reused for dust suppression, gardening and industrial needs. Control of the full cycle of water consumption and discharge allows for reuse of over 50% of treated wastewater.

PREVENTION OF CONTAMINATION & RESPONSE

Operating both onshore and offshore, ERSAI aims to avoid the risk of spills. To control this risk, ERSAI has implemented mitigation and prevention measures. Preventive measures include raising awareness of the possible risks, maintaining equipment in good working conditions and using containments in risk areas.

Mitigation measures include effective response to emergencies. For this reason, ERSAI has established a spill response team, who are trained to use spill response materials and equipment, as well as developed trainings for personnel involved in hazardous materials handling to quickly respond to spills. Response equipment includes dispersants, booms, skimmers, absorbent materials, bioremediation materials.

TRAININGS AND AWARENESS

An important step to achieving high level environmental performance is through raising awareness of personnel. ERSAI uses trainings, Toolbox Talks, drills, bulletins and posters to ensure compliance.

ERSAI environmental department committed to raise environmental awareness by setting two major objectives for 2018:

  • to make environmental trainings available on ERSAI online training site;
  • to develop and deliver five training sessions within the scope of environmental campaign ‘5 challenges towards rational use resources’ focusing on water, waste, food, fuel and energy as resources.

RESOURCES RATIONAL USE

Rational use of energy

In 2017 ERSAI has taken an initiative to increase energy use efficiency. A training on energy efficiency and conservation was developed and delivered to office personnel aiming to raise the awareness of energy conservation strategies. In order to lower energy consumption an effective LED lighting system is being installed all over the yard and residential area. New residential buildings are equipped with key card systems that switch off the electricity supply when rooms are not occupied, avoiding excess power consumption.

RESOURCES RATIONAL USE

Rational use of water

Water saving techniques and rational water use methods are introduced to ERSAI personnel regularly via distribution of posters, bulletins and delivery of trainings. Control of the full cycle of water consumption and discharge allows for reuse of over 50% of treated wastewater for dust suppression and irrigation purposes in the warm seasons.

EVENTS

The World Environment Day is celebrated annually at ERSAI on the 5th of June. Events like cleaning up the area around the yard and planting of trees around offices take place within the scope of the World Environment Day.

Each year an original theme is introduced, for example, this year the theme is Beat Plastic Pollution, so on the WED 2018 the awareness session was dedicated to plastic pollution issues. Dedicated to the WED a contest on the Best Environmental Story was also held where participants submitted stories about their environmental efforts and ideas. Best stories were presented with valuable gifts. In hopes to lower plastic bag use, environmental department presented each participant of the WED with a cloth shopping bag.
