D Island Rig Conversion (2009-2010)

Kashagan Field Development Experimental Programme

ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Inc. (EMKI) has been nominated as Drilling Operator in developing the North Caspian Project in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The field was situated in the northern part of the Caspian Sea close to the Kazakhstan city of Atyrau and covers an area of over 5,500 square km (approx. 2,200 square miles).

The future phase development drilling program was based on drilling at Drilling Clusters (Rock Islands) in a water depths ranging from 3.1 m CD (4.1 m MSL) to 6.6 m CD (7.6 m MSL) and utilizing transportation barges to be loaded in floating conditions.

Company was operating two land based drilling facilities (Rigs 401 and 402) located on “D” Island in the Kashagan Field.

Rig 401 after the completion of the works, was moved from “D” Island to a new Drilling Cluster in the second quarter of 2010 ready to be ready for “spud-in” at the end of fourth quarter of 2010 and rigged-up with new support facilities.

Rig 402, after the completion of preparatory works and after completing preservation activities, was parked in a “winterization stack mode” on “D” Island before moving in the second quarter of 2011.

The Common Area had to be disassembled, loaded on barges, transported to the Onshore Yard and stored, in order to be partially reutilized for Rig 402 on DC01.

The basis of this project is the movement of Rigs 401, 402 and CA from “D” Island to Drilling Cluster DC05, DC01 and to Onshore Yard respectively.
